The moment I walked into Grace Episcopal Church in Madison, Wisconsin, I knew Amelia and Josh’s wedding day was going to be something unforgettable. Their celebration was filled with warmth, intention, and so much joy. But the moment that truly took everyone’s breath away was their candlelit unity ceremony.
As a Wisconsin wedding photographer, moments like this remind me why I love what I do—capturing the kind of forever memories couples will hold onto for a lifetime.
The Couple + Their Vision
Meet Amelia and Josh. These two high school sweethearts radiate an effortless, deeply rooted kind of love. From the moment I met them, they carried a “we’re home when we’re together” energy that made photographing them a dream.
During our initial call, Amelia shared that they wanted their wedding to feel like stepping into a cozy booth in an expensive restaurant. Think: moody, intimate, warm, and full of intentional details. They absolutely nailed that vision.
To create that feeling, they incorporated a group unity ceremony during their vows—inviting every guest to light a candle. It was personal, emotional, and nothing short of magical.
The Venue + Setting
Amelia and Josh celebrated with dinner and dancing at The Park Hotel on Madison’s Capitol Square. The second-floor ballroom featured deep red tones, gold accents, and a show-stopping cake that guests couldn’t stop admiring. Cocktail hour was held on the 8th floor with gorgeous views of the Capitol.
But before all the fun began, their ceremony took place at Grace Episcopal Church—yes, the one behind the iconic red doors on the Square. Inside, the soaring ceilings, stained glass windows, and naturally dim lighting created a dreamy, cinematic atmosphere. As the unity ceremony began and the lights lowered even further, the warmth in the room deepened in the most beautiful way.
The Candlelit Unity Ceremony
After seeing each other for the first time during Amelia’s walk down the aisle—wearing a stunning strapless ballgown with a matching neckpiece and escorted by her mom—the ceremony began with a few heartfelt readings about love.
Then, the lights dimmed.
Amelia and Josh lit the first set of candles on the stage. From there, they lit the candles of their wedding party, who then walked to the pews to light each guest’s candle. One by one, the room came alive with warm, flickering light.
The littles watched in awe. Guests wiped away tears. Every face was softly glowing.
Once all the candles were lit, Amelia and Josh exchanged their vows, fully present with the people who mattered most. It was an emotional moment for everyone—myself included.
The lights rose, the candles were gently blown out, rings were exchanged, and before anyone knew it, Amelia and Josh were sharing their first kiss as husband and wife.
Photography Moments I Loved
After the ceremony, Amelia and Josh celebrated inside the church with their wedding party, who couldn’t stop admiring the new rings. The couple then exited the church to cheers from their family and friends.
We traveled to the Capitol building for some fun and classy wedding party portraits—girls and guys splitting off for their own moments—and then boarded the party bus for more celebrations on the way to the UW Arboretum. There, we captured a mix of joyful group portraits and timeless, romantic couples’ photos in the soft natural light of the afternoon.
Every single moment was a dream.
Reception Highlights
The reception was packed with unforgettable moments. Before the grand entrance, Amelia quietly removed her overskirt, revealing that her voluminous gown was actually layered over a stunning mermaid-style silhouette. She surprised Josh with the transformation, and his reaction was priceless.
Then came the entrances.
The wedding party burst into the room with unmatched energy. Dancing, tossing confetti, setting off cash cannons, and rocking heart-shaped glasses. When Amelia and Josh entered, the entire space erupted with excitement.
After dinner came heartfelt speeches from Amelia’s mother and several members of the wedding party. Amelia shared a beautiful dance with her mom in honor of her late father, and there wasn’t a dry eye in the room. Josh and his mom followed with an equally emotional dance.
After a warm thank you to their guests, the DJ opened the dance floor and kept the party going all night long.
For late-night snacks, they served cotton candy and tacos (the perfect combo!), and we slipped away for a few dreamy nighttime portraits on the hotel stairs.
