Some weddings are loud, sprawling celebrations with hundreds of guests and months of meticulous planning. And then there are weddings like Abby and Dan's — quiet, intentional, and so deeply them that you feel every single moment in your chest. As a Milwaukee wedding photographer, days like this remind me exactly why I love this work.

After ten years together, these two knew exactly what they wanted: their parents, their closest friend as officiant, and the beautiful staircase at Lake Park in Milwaukee. That's it. And honestly? It was perfect.

First Look at the Hilton Garden Inn Downtown Milwaukee

We kicked off the afternoon at the Hilton Garden Inn Downtown Milwaukee, where Abby and Dan shared their first look on the grand staircase. There is something so intimate about a first look at a small wedding — no crowd noise, no distractions, just two people seeing each other and letting it all sink in. The moment Dan turned around, it was clear this day was going to be full of feeling.

Wedding Portraits at the Federal Building in Downtown Milwaukee

From there, we made our way to the Federal Building in downtown Milwaukee for portraits. If you haven't visited the Federal Building, the architecture alone is worth the trip — grand, timeless, and full of texture that makes portraits really sing. Abby and Dan were naturals, and the joy between them was so effortless to capture. It's one of my favorite spots for Milwaukee wedding photography, and this session is a great example of why.

The Ceremony at Lake Park

The Lake Park staircase is one of Milwaukee's most beautiful elopement ceremony spots, and Abby and Dan made it feel truly special. With just their parents and an officiant friend gathered around them, they exchanged vows that were beautiful — the kind that make your eyes sting a little behind the camera. The excitement and emotion radiating from their parents was palpable. You could feel how proud, how moved, how happy they all were. These are the moments I live for.

After the ceremony, we wrapped up with family portraits — and it was so special to be reunited with this family. Abby and Dan first booked me last summer for extended family portraits in Milwaukee, and getting to photograph them again for one of the biggest days of their lives felt like a full-circle moment I'll always treasure.

The Details

A few things I can't stop thinking about from this intimate Milwaukee wedding: the flowers from Sendik's were absolutely stunning (seriously, do not sleep on Sendik's for Milwaukee wedding florals), Abby's aunt did her hair — the sweetest, most personal touch — and that ring. I've photographed a lot of Milwaukee weddings, and Abby's ring is genuinely one of the most stunning I've ever seen. The couple closed out their elopement day with a private dinner at Chef's Table Milwaukee, which feels like exactly the right ending to a day this thoughtful.

Thinking About a Small or Intimate Wedding in Milwaukee?

If you've been dreaming of a Milwaukee elopement or micro wedding — stripped down to what actually matters, the person you love, the people who matter most, and a setting that speaks to you — I want you to know that those weddings are just as real, just as worthy of being beautifully documented, and honestly, some of the most emotional days I get to be a part of. Abby and Dan are proof that you don't need a ballroom full of guests to feel every bit of the magic.
