Set in the historic Elizabeth F. Cheney Mansion in Oak Park, Illinois on a cool April day, Jon and Caroline wanted their wedding day to feel like a Hollywood house party — bright flash, editorial portraits, and vintage warmth. More than anything, these two wanted to prioritize their time with each other and with the people they love.
They let the venue do the talking. With minimal décor and florals, the character of Cheney Mansion took center stage: creaking floors, historic details on every wall, and guests free to wander both floors and take it all in. Even their attire leaned into the aesthetic — Jon in a classic black tuxedo, and Caroline in an effortlessly stunning drop-waist strapless gown by Flora with a cathedral veil from Alice in Ivory Boutique. They aren't a flashy couple. Just two people deeply, quietly in love.
That love was impossible to miss during the ceremony. Friends and family gathered in excitement, and when Jon and Caroline read their hand-written vows, there wasn't a dry eye in the room.
Their first look, held before the ceremony, set the tone for the whole day. Jon could barely hold it together seeing Caroline for the first time, and the portraits we captured — both inside the mansion and out on the grounds — were some of the most beautiful I've ever made. It was a cool, overcast day, which gave us soft, even light that was practically made for photography.
The reception was as relaxed and genuine as the two of them. Cocktail hour unfolded in the solarium and out on the patio, with the mansion's beautiful greenhouse as a backdrop. Guests mingled freely while Jon and Caroline soaked in their first moments as husband and wife surrounded by their favorite people. We slipped away just before dinner for a few more veil portraits — some of my favorites from the day.

Dinner brought the speeches: Caroline's bridesmaid, Jon's best man, Caroline's mom, and Jon's dad all had the room in both tears and laughter. The parent dances that followed were short and tender — Caroline with her mom, then Jon with his — before the couple took the floor for their first dance. During our planning conversations, Caroline had told me they're not big slow-dancers, so they chose a song that started soft and built into something faster. They swayed for a moment, and then — right on cue — the energy exploded and suddenly everyone was on the dance floor. It was the most alive moment of the night. They capped the evening with a few late-night flash portraits that felt like the perfect punctuation mark.

As I was packing up to leave, Caroline pulled me into the longest hug I've ever received and had me in tears telling me how grateful she was. I told her the feeling was mutual — because these are genuinely some of my favorite photos of my entire career. And not just because Jon is my cousin and half the room is my family (surprise!), but because these two were never afraid to put their love on full display, even on the busiest day of their lives. I'm so grateful they trusted me with it.
